Frequently Asked Questions for SeniorITIS Employers

How much of a time commitment will this be on my end? While we can’t give you a specific answer as each internship is different, 2-3 hours per week would be ideal in terms of providing an intern instructions for tasks and to allow some time for some one on one mentoring time. If you can only give 1-2 hours, but will have work that will keep an intern busy that is acceptable.

When would this internship happen? Any four week period from July 6- August 14. The four weeks do not need to be consecutive.

What kind of work can we give an intern to do? Anything you feel an intern might be capable of accomplishing. The work can be on the simpler end, such as proof reading or social media managing. But it can also be more complex like web design and coding or graphic design (majority of our intern applicants have impressive computer/tech skills). A task that might take up a week or more of work is ideal, but smaller daily tasks are acceptable as well.

What supervision is required? As interns will be working remotely there will be a certain degree of trust involved, certainly more than an in-office internship. However, we would suggest checking in on the interns 1-2 times a day via phone, email, or text…so long as they know that they’re on your radar.

Are the interns paid? Not by you. Jewish Federation will pay the interns a minimum wage salary for up to 15 hours a week, for four weeks. They may work more than 15 hours per week, but on a volunteer basis. You may hire the interns for additional work once they’ve completed their four-week placement.

Do I need to provide equipment? Hardware, no. Software, possibly. Interns will be expected to work off their own laptops and equipment. Employers will be responsible for providing any software necessary to an intern’s job.

How old are the interns? All SeniorITIS interns are students who have recently finished grades 11 or 12.

Are they all Greater MetroWest residents? Yes, all interns reside in either Essex, Union, Morris, Sussex, or north Somerset Counties.

Do I need to interview the interns? Yes. However, each SeniorITIS intern will have already had an internship with JTEEN-GMW Director Yoni Glatt and will have had his/her references checked. If you are contacted about a particular intern, then the chances are quite high he/she will be a good fit for you. Over 90% of past placement employers have been satisfied with the first and only intern they interviewed.

Do they have any requirements to fulfill? Yes. Each week the interns will attend a Zoom SeniorITIS Seminar where they will participate in a Jewish learning session and get to hear a lecture from a Jewish professional.

What kind of experience should this be for the interns? In a “normal” summer the goals of the SeniorITIS program are for the interns to gain hands-on, workplace experience while creating long-lasting professional relationships. But this is not a normal summer. A majority of local teens have had their summer programs cancelled and are looking for any sort of constructive program or activity. While it would be ideal if our interns had the kind of experienced outlined above, we know providing a teen with any sort of (paid) job will be of great value.
What does SeniorITIS stand for? Senior Institute for Teens In Service.
